Willard and Ida Haight

Today I will share some photos of Willard, Ida and their family.  This post will be picture heavy!

I love this progression of family group photos!!

And finally, some newspaper articles:

All these images are in Cynda's collection.  Many thanks to her for allowing me to scan them, and then helping me to identify the people in the photos.

If I can figure out how to include PDF files, I will share more newspaper articles I have found online.

Enjoy!

Romanus Elmouth Krause and Lucretia S. Warren

Elbert Krause's parents were Romanus Krause and Lucretia Warren.  They were married April 25, 1894 and had two boys, Elbert Lester, my grandfather, born in 1895, and Hubert Lee, born in 1897.  Lucretia died in 1900 and Romanus married Emma Swindell in 1901.  They had six children, five girls and one boy.

Here is a photo of Romanus, courtesy of Judy Krause Mobley.  She found me several years ago and called to introduce herself.  We spent a delightful several hours on the phone getting acquainted and sharing stories.  She is descended from Romanus's son with Emma Swindell.

This information is from Judy:

About 1900, Belhaven, NC

Was a yacht builder; built amazing beautiful boats in Belhaven, NC.  One of the larger boats was the "Dixie", which was 75' long.  It was confiscated by the US Navy, outfitted with cannons, and served in Europe during WWI.  Most wooden boats were taken because the German subs could not ping off wood boats.  The Dixie was returned to its owner in NC after the war.

It is interesting to note that his father captained schooners and his son, Elbert, was also a ship builder, eventually working at the shipyard in Portsmouth, VA.  I have a mast that Elbert made that was supposed to go on a boat that never quite got built.

In 1916, Romanus was issued a patent for air cushions for automobiles, aka shock absorbers.  Pretty cool, huh?

Here is a copy of his Certificate of Death:

Willard Reed Haight and Ida May Smith

Esther Haight Krause's parents were Willard Reed Haight and Ida May Smith.  They had nine children, the youngest dying in infancy.  Below is a photo taken in 1920.

John Augustus Krause

My most recent obsession for research has been John Augustus Krause, my great great grandfather.  According to records I have been able to find, he was born in Germany around 1814 and emmigrated to America sometime before his marriage to Mary Ann Easter around 1848.  I have been unable to find out anything about when or how he died.

Mary Ann's tombstone is engraved with "Wife of Capt. J. A. Krause".  I am leaning towards the possibility that he died as sea, as he captained at least 3 schooners that traveled between Washington, North Carolina and New York City.

According to the Shipping and Commercial List and New York Price Current (New York, New York) publication that I have searched through at GenealogyBank.com, he was captain of the following three schooners:

Schooner Elizabeth Ann, October 1850 to October 1853
Schooner Mary E. Hoover February 1854 to March 1855
Schooner Oregon August 1856 to April 1861

All three were based out of Washington, North Carolina.  It appears he spend a LOT of time at sea.  I can find no mention of him after 1861.  The next mention of him is when Mary Ann filed for a Civil War pension in his name in 1890, at which time she was a widow.

New Venture!I

I have been researching my family history for about 20 years.  I started out by visiting the local Family History Center and searching through microfilms.

One branch of our family were very good at saving family history.  I have had the pleasure and honor of scanning many of these items and would like to share them with my cousins.  If you have an photos and / or stories you would like shared here, just let me know.  This is a project that will be all the better with your input.

The photo below is our "starting family".  I believe this was the only time that Elbert and Esther had a photo taken of all their children and spouses.  Below that is a photo of the grandchildren born at that time.  The family has expanded greatly since then.

(6/27/17  Just revised the above photo with additional information from Anita Krause Martin.  She is missing from the photo.  She would have been about 1 year old at the time.)

If there is anything in particular you want to know more about, let me know.  In the meantime, I will add photos and images as the spirit moves, no particular order, just what I happen to be working on at the time.
