Romanus Elmouth Krause and Lucretia S. Warren

Elbert Krause's parents were Romanus Krause and Lucretia Warren.  They were married April 25, 1894 and had two boys, Elbert Lester, my grandfather, born in 1895, and Hubert Lee, born in 1897.  Lucretia died in 1900 and Romanus married Emma Swindell in 1901.  They had six children, five girls and one boy.

Here is a photo of Romanus, courtesy of Judy Krause Mobley.  She found me several years ago and called to introduce herself.  We spent a delightful several hours on the phone getting acquainted and sharing stories.  She is descended from Romanus's son with Emma Swindell.

About 1900, Belhaven, NC

Was a yacht builder; built amazing beautiful boats in Belhaven, NC.  One of the larger boats was the "Dixie", which was 75' long.  It was confiscated by the US Navy, outfitted with cannons, and served in Europe during WWI.  Most wooden boats were taken because the German subs could not ping off wood boats.  The Dixie was returned to its owner in NC after the war.

It is interesting to note that his father captained schooners and his son, Elbert, was also a ship builder, eventually working at the shipyard in Portsmouth, VA.  I have a mast that Elbert made that was supposed to go on a boat that never quite got built.

In 1916, Romanus was issued a patent for air cushions for automobiles, aka shock absorbers.  Pretty cool, huh?
